The Viewfinder: “When The Night Falls” by Chromeo
If you haven’t picked up Chromeo’s Business Casual album yet, you are missing out on some serious dance-pop goodness. These two Canucks make music that takes listeners back to the glory days of post-disco dance pop. It’s got a 1983 flavor, with a little bit of 2011 irreverence thrown in. The year-old project has gotten a new life, including the announcement of a tour with them and kindred spirit Mayer Hawthorne, and a video for the single “When The Night […]
Everybody Dance Now!: Chromeo Announces New Tour with Mayer Hawthorne
If you have a case of the blahs and need to get your ass up and moving, very few acts of recent vintage do that better than Canadian dance/pop duo Chromeo. Following the success of last year’s excellent Business Casual album, the fellas are heading back on tour through the summer and fall. Joining them on this jaunt will be their neighbor to the south, Detroit’s own Mayer Hawthorne. The smooth soul vocalist will be touring with the Chromeo guys […]
Come on Over to Daryl’s House for Some Adul…Uh, Music Education
So, as you can tell from yesterday’s post , I’ve been in something of a Daryl Hall mood lately. I’ve been a huge fan since I was a little kid, and I think it’s very cool that nowadays people recognize Daryl as one of his generation’s best songwriters and vocalists. Hall & Oates were the definition of ear candy in the early Eighties and were more influential than you might think at first glance. Listen to “I Can’t Go for That (No […]
Popblerd! Presents: The Top 40 Albums of 2010 (35-31)
Check out #40-#36 here . 35. Jamie Cullum, The Pursuit (Verve) We Americans had to wait a little longer for The Pursuit than his native Brits, the singer/songwriter’s third major-label album was a 2009 release in Jamie’s homeland. Turns out the album was worth the wait. Cullum is equally at home with poignant ballads as he is with energetic pop tunes, which is what separates him from supposed contemporaries like Michael Boring Buble. Extra points for his caffeinated supper-club version of […]
The Viewfinder: Chromeo’s “Hot Mess”
Chromeo’s “Business Casual” hasn’t set the charts on fire like I hoped it would-which has nothing to do with the quality of the album. Maybe America just isn’t ready for a group of funky Canadians yet. Perhaps that issue can be rectified with the album’s second video, for the song “Hot Mess”. The song, like much of Chromeo’s music, hits that Eighties sweet spot. It’s like the perfect mix of Midnight Star’s “No Parking on the Dance Floor” and Wham!’s […]
New Release Report 9/14/10: The Floodgates Open
The last couple of weeks have been pretty quiet on the new release front. Well, folks, brace yourselves. ‘Cause there’s a TON of stuff coming out this Tuesday and for the next several Tuesdays. Let’s jump right into it, huh? Linkin Park occasionally gets lumped in with the whole nu-metal movement, which is kinda sad, because I think Chester Bennington and Mike Shinoda have more musical talent in their pinkie fingers than Fred Durst has in his whole body. At […]
Monday Evening Dance Party with Chromeo!!
“Canada” and “funky” are two words that you rarely, if ever, hear used in the same sentence without a “not” in between them. However, Chromeo, a duo of soul/dance enthusiasts from the Great White North, are changing that perception. Their music definitely has a throwback quality to it…very early Eighties New York sounding. Like, if Jamiroquai is 1979-1981 or so, then Chromeo is maybe 1983-1985? Something like that. Anyhow, the critics love ’em, Daryl Hall loves ’em, and with their […]
