Front Line Assembly, "Killing Grounds": The Singles Bar Review

Front Line Assembly, “Killing Grounds”: The Singles Bar Review

Is that dubstep I hear in “Killing Grounds”, the first offering from Front Line Assembly’s upcoming ECHOGENETIC album? It kind of sounds like there is but with most everything FLA do, they make it work. Definitely a more electronic and dance-heavy vibe than 2010’s Improvised. Electronic. Device., “Killing Grounds” still has Bill Leeb’s uncanny snarl at the forefront propelled by some killer beats and interesting forays into new genres all within six minutes. ECHOGENETIC is out on July 9th […]

The Uncle Phil Shuffle aka the Carlton Shuffle: Father's Day Edition!

The Uncle Phil Shuffle aka the Carlton Shuffle: Father’s Day Edition!

Our main Shuffle man, Gonzo , is traveling the next couple of weeks so I get the privilege of “mixing” our Carlton Shuffle. And I had fun doing it! Every week we ask the PopBlerd! crew what they are listening to. Every week we get a mixture of songs from every genre, and every generation. It’s kinda cool. With Father’s Day this Sunday I thought it’d be appropriate if we came up with a list of “Songs About Dad”. Little did […]

Have you heard the new Filter record, The Sun Comes Out Tonight, yet? Well, what are you waiting for? Lead vocalist Richard Patrick recently spoke to us via phone to talk about the new album, the upcoming tour, and what the biggest difference is at being in Filter in 2013 versus when the band started in 1993. read on for more: What sets The Sun Comes Out Tonight from other Filter releases? Honestly, it’s our guitar player Johnny Radtke, and […]

Phillip Cope of Kylesa: The Popblerd Interview!

Phillip Cope of Kylesa: The Popblerd Interview!

If you haven’t heard Kylesa’s fantastic sixth album, then mainman Phillip Cope is here to tell you why you should check it out as he chatted with Pop!Blerd about their latest disc and upcoming tour via phone recently: Ultraviolet represents the longest gap between studio albums since Time Will Fuse… and Static Tensions, how long did the writing and recording of Ultraviolet actually take? We wrote off an on for about two years and we spent about two months in […]

The Popblerd Halftime Show: Jesse's Best of 2013 So Far

The Popblerd Halftime Show: Jesse’s Best of 2013 So Far

Half over? Already?!?!?! Time flies when you’re listening to great music I guess and 2013 so far, for me at least, has been pretty spectacular. I’m sure this list will change come December but for now I leave you with the following: 1. Ghost: Infestissamum / Skinny Puppy: Weapon These two albums are in a dead heat for me at the moment. Who will win? No one knows (Well, I guess I do…). Anywho, I listen to a track off of each of these at […]

Jonny 5 of Flobots: The Popblerd Interview!

As I walked up the steps of Dado Tea next to The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA before the Flobots show, I saw a man wearing a striped shirt and glasses sitting outside sipping the rest of his drink and trying to get one of the blueberries out of the bottom while looking at his phone. We introduced ourselves and asked the basic questions before getting into topics like what music means to him and people in general, rallying with Rage […]

Chrisette Michele, Better: Album Review

Chrisette Michele, Better: Album Review

R&B and I have had a rough run of it over the past few years. With the exception of a couple of outliers (Ne-Yo’s Libra Scale, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid), there have not been R&B albums that spoke to me the way that old school Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott and Robin Thicke did in the late 90s and early 2000s. Chrisette Michelle fell right into the middle of that rut, despite getting off to a […]

Jimmy Eat World, Damage : Album Review

Jimmy Eat World, Damage : Album Review

It’s hard to believe Tempe, AZ’s Jimmy Eat World are now on their seventh album.  Yet here we are with the boys who created such college radio staples like ‘Lucky Denver Mint,’ ‘The Middle,’ ‘Sweetness’ and ‘The Authority Song,’ confronting relationship issues and converting them into four-minute rock songs. The new album is entitled Damage and once again, its tackling life in the mid- to late-30’s.  As a listener, I suppose you could say I’ve spent the past fifteen years growing […]

It's Not Summer Unless There's a New Jack Johnson Record...

It’s Not Summer Unless There’s a New Jack Johnson Record…

Despite the fact that it’s kinda grey and crummy on the East Coast as I write this, Jack Johnson’s music immediately makes me picture sunshine, cookouts, beaches and the welcome smell of that sticky-icky wafting through the air. The Hawaiian singer/songwriter/surfer doesn’t disappoint on his latest track, “I Got You.” No, the song doesn’t sound much different from the rest of Jack Johnson’s oeuvre, but come on, how can you hate on music that makes you feel so mellow? It’s […]

Sigur Ros, Kveikur: Album Review

Sigur Ros, Kveikur: Album Review

Percussive is the first word that should instantly come to mind when listening to Sigur Ros’ latest, Kveikur (Pronounced “quaker” but translates into “Candlewick”). Just take a listen to first single “Brennisteinn” or to the title track. Sonically, Kveikur is unlike anything Sigur Ros has ever done….even menacing at points (Again with “Brennisteinn”) but it’s all executed exquisitely. It’s also one of their most concise albums. Maybe due to it being the first for XL Recordings? Or maybe Sigur Ros […]
