Spin Cycle: The Strokes, Comedown Machine

Spin Cycle: The Strokes, Comedown Machine

The Strokes have reached album number five.  I’m not entirely sure anyone’s more surprised at this fact than Strokes fans themselves.  I say this counting myself among those ranks, though I’ve done more head scratching than bopping to the beat in more recent years. Julian Casablancas seems almost like a falsetto-voiced (though it didn’t used to be that way) Marlon Brando of 21st century new wave revival.  To find his genius you have to dig and sometimes you find diamonds, […]

Popblerd’s New Release Report 3/26/12: Lil Wayne is Still Alive

Still dapper after three decades…Depeche Mode’s return is one of several things to look forward to on this release date.

bLISTerd Presents: Tom's Top 11 Albums of 2011

bLISTerd Presents: Tom’s Top 11 Albums of 2011

My favorites jumped around a lot this year but the two at the top– despite one’s “newness”– are easily ahead of the rest.  2011 wasn’t the best year ever for music, but it produced a small number of records that I really like. *1. Foo Fighters, Wasting Light I called this my record of the year halfway through 2011.  “If there is a better second half of the year release I’ll console myself with that hypothetically brain-punchingly excellent album.”  Bands get sharper […]

bLISTerd Extra: The Top 10 (11?) Albums of 2011 (So Far)…Tom’s Turn

1) Foo Fighters –Wasting Light Record of the year.  If there is a better second half of the year release I’ll console myself with that hypothetically brain-punchingly excellent album.  Bands get sharper over time; few have hit the running peak of passion and musicianship the Foos are on right now. 2) Hayes Carll – KMAG YOYO  Never heard of him.Saw two Carllsongs on my way out of another show.  Bought the album out of left field.  Alt-country, straight-up country, straight-up […]

Chart Stalker: It’s Britney (Again), Bitch!

This week’s Billboard album chart features 5 new albums in the Top Ten, led by Britney Spears. Her seventh studio album, Femme Fatale, opens at the top spot with 276,000 copies sold. On the good side, that represents the second highest first week number of the year so far (narrowly edging out last week’s Chris Brown total). Also on the good side, it’s Britney’s sixth number one album (out of seven releases). On the bad side, it’s the lowest first […]

Chart Stalker 3/30/11: No Such Thing as Bad Press

What brings me to this particular conclusion? The fact that Chris Brown’s F.A.M.E. debuts atop the Billboard 200 album chart this week with the second biggest first week sales of his career. Not even a full-on temper tantrum on the set of “Good Morning America” after being confronted with questions regarding his arrest for assault could stop over 270,0o0 fans from purchasing his album. Interestingly enough, F.A.M.E.‘s first week number is also higher than the first week number for any […]

New Release Report 3/22/10: The First Super Tuesday of 2011

Some big name stuff coming out today, so let’s get right to it. Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to open your wallets!! Chris Brown “F.A.M.E.”– The acronym in the title stands for “forgiving all my enemies”, which doesn’t exactly put me back on Team CB (well, to be fair, I was never on the dude’s team to begin with). No one forced you to beat the shit out of your girlfriend, doggie. Anyway, considering the barrage of hits he’s had recently […]

The Strokes “Angles” Their Way Back Into Our Good Graces

I may have been too dismissive when “Under Cover of Darkness”, the first single off of The Strokes’ Angles, debuted a little while back. I felt the song didn’t do anything for the band. It was Strokes-by-numbers, the same old, same old. “Under Cover…” was actually The Strokes re-introducing themselves to us through trickery. “Hey everybody, we’re back! If you liked us before, you’ll still love us now!” One things for sure after listening to Angles is that this is […]

More Festival News!: New Orleans Jazzfest Lineup Announced

One of my biggest regrets to date is that I have not yet been able to make it down to New Orleans. Several of my good friends have either gone to school in the area or have visited at least once. Between the craziness that is Mardi Gras and the amazing lineups that pop up for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year, I feel as though I’m missing out on what would be a really special experience. […]

Coachella Lineup Announced!: Care for Some KoL or Kanye?

I’m sure many of you reading will not have a problem traveling out to the California desert to see the Coachella Music Festival. Me? I’ve actually never been to a multi-day music festival, and going all the way across the country is not really on my agenda-unless I have a really good reason to do so. The lineup for this year’s Coachella has me seriously thinking about making the trek in April (key word: “thinking”). This year’s headliners include Kings […]
