Chart Stalker Extra: It Was Twenty Years Ago Today…(Almost)

When you see that there’s a Chart Stalker Extra, you know it means one thing. This week’s Billboard chart is boring. As. Shit. Really, it is. There weren’t any major new releases last week, so that means Beyonce holds on for a second frame at Number One, moving a still impressive 115,000 units. She’ll cross the Gold sales threshold next week, but her stint at the top will be over by that point. It looks like next week’s chart champ […]

bLISTerd Extra: The Top 10 Albums of 2011 (So Far): Drew’s Up to Bat

10. Adele, 21 // Lady Gaga, Born This Way Because it’s my list, that’s why. Gaga may not be the best pop princess doing it right now (spoiler alert – Beyonce), but Born This Way does compound on her zany promise, and if it doesn’t reach the dizzying pop heights of The Fame Monster, it’s certainly every bit as flamboyantly giddy as we expected it to be. Adele’s another pop princess, but she’s achieving her success by dressing her songs […]

Chart Stalker 7/6/11: At the Halfway Point

First things first: this week’s chart brings good news and bad news. First-the good news. Beyonce acquits herself well with a chart-topping entry for 4. The R&B songstress’s latest effort starts at #1 on the pop and R&B album charts with 310,000 units. While it’s a little lower than the numbers that have greeted past efforts, if anyone considers a total north of 300,000 copies to be a failure or a disappointment, they’re seriously delusional. Bey is the biggest of […]

Spin Cycle Plus: Beyonce’s “4”

Beyonce’s 4 has been quite the subject of discussion over at Popblerd HQ. With so many opinions about the pop star’s work and the controversy surrounding the album (after several songs from the album underperformed and the entire set leaked about a month before release, it was rumored that Beyonce’s record company asked her to go back into the studio and retool the album. These rumors have been categorically denied all around), it was only right that we gave you […]

Chart Stalker 6/29/11: Jill Scott “Light”s Up the Chart with Her First #1

It took twelve years and four studio albums, but Jill Scott can finally lay claim to the #1 album in the country. The Light of the Sun, the singer/actress’s first album since emancipating herself from Hidden Beach, the label that’d guided her from her start,  sells a solid 135,000 units to land at the apex of the Billboard chart. This has been quite the estrogen-filled chart year, hasn’t it? The two biggest names at the top of the chart this […]

New Release Report 6/28/11: B-Day?

The biggest news of the week is the release of Beyonce’s imaginatively-titled fourth album, 4. Or is it? The fact that it leaked three weeks ago and the response to it has been muted (both critically and commercially-in the form of track sales) has to alarm Camp Knowles. Might this be the album that cracks B’s golden bubble? Maybe, maybe not. It can’t be good when 1/3 of your album has already made it onto iTunes with minimal reaction. However, […]

Award Show Sundays Special: The 2011 BET Awards Live Blog

It’s been a minute since we live-blogged an awards show around these parts. I gave some consideration to doing some commentary on the Billboard Music Awards, but got pulled into another direction-a move that turned out to be a wise one (since all of the clips I saw from the show and all of the commentary I saw on social media was lukewarm.) I have a love-hate relationship with the BET Awards (to say nothing of my largely HATE relationship […]

Chart Stalker 6/23/11: Bad Meets Evil and Tops the Charts

Eminem has returned to the top of the Billboard album charts, and he’s brought his homeboy Royce Da 5’9 along with him. Teaming up as Bad Meets Evil, the duo debuts at #1 with Hell: The Sequel. 171,000 people bought the album; not fantastic numbers for a title Eminem-affiliated, but this album comes without the pop cachet that his solo albums generally have. In other words, this is something for the hip-hop heads. So a chart-topping debut is still impressive. […]

The New Blerd Radio Episode 5: Happy Blerdthday!

Memorial Day wasn’t the only holiday celebrated this week! There was also a Blerd birthday to acknowledge, so Mike & Jesse too to the airwaves on an off-week to give you yet another episode of caffeinated, alcohol-fueled commentary on the latest in pop culture. Discussed this week: -How do kids survive the rapture? (well, more specifically, Jesse’s kid) -How did a friend of ours find something gross in his Wendy’s meal? -Marv Albert is NOT Herb Alpert. Or Merv Griffin. […]

Chart Stalker: Gaga Goes for a Mil

Pop star Lady Gaga leads this week’s Billboard album chart with her new album, Born This Way. It moves a jaw dropping 1.1 million units in it’s first week. It’s the biggest first week for any album since 50 Cent’s The Massacre dropped in 2005, and it’s the biggest first week for a female artist ever. Of course, Gaga’s achievement will come with an asterisk, as well over 400,000 copies of that were purchased from amazon.com during a promotion on […]

Blerd Briefs: “Idol”, Lenny & Beyonce

Those of you who follow GG’s “American Idol” wrap-ups every week on this site are probably also aware that he posts a results day blog on sonicclash.com. As I’m sure many of you know by now, teenager Scotty McCreery won the competition. As someone who didn’t watch a single episode of the show this year (GG’s posts were entertaining enough for me), I’m wondering if Scotty has what it takes to become a superstar in the vein of a Carrie Underwood or Kelly […]

American Idol Season 10 – And Then There Were Three

There was an uproar over Big Game James leaving last week. People were swearing that they weren’t watching the show anymore. This show sucks! I’m going to let those of you disgusted folks in on a secret. Come closely to the computer screen. Ahem; there isn’t a true front runner on this show, thus, no one was robbed and you shouldn’t be surprised who wins this season. James could’ve won the show. But so could the rest of the three. […]
