The recent success of artists like Adele and Mumford & Sons has created a lane for artists who have a classic sound but are a little off the beaten path, sound-wise. It apparently helps if they’re British, which should create a clear lane for Michael Kiwanuka to achieve success in the U.S. when his debut, Home Again, arrives later this spring. If I’d compare Michael to anyone, I’d say he’s got a little bit of Bill Withers mixed with an […]

Popblerd’s Grammy Preview & Predictions 2012: Pop Category
There’s been a fair amount of bitching and moaning about the omission of several categories from the Grammy repertoire, and heavies like Jesse Jackson (what the fuck does he have to do with music?) and Carlos Santana (what the f…oh, never mind) have made their grievances known. Hey, has anyone noticed that they cut categories from ALL genres of music? Even pop categories are missing. The best pop collaboration category has been jettisoned, and as with Rock and R&B, the […]
bLISTerd: The 100 Best Albums Of The ’00s (100-91)
We’re in 2012. Is it too early for ‘00s nostalgia? Oh, the first decade of the new millennium. The decade we were introduced to the iPod, the smart phone, texting and all sorts of technological advances that have made us incredibly lazy beings. We decided to start voting for our pop stars on TV, Janet Jackson torpedoed her career by showing us a nipple, and Mariah Carey went crazy and then made a comeback (but she’s still crazy). Oh, and […]
This Year’s Coachella Lineup Is Hipster Heaven!
After several false-alarms and Photoshopped posters, the official lineup for the 2012 Coachella Music and Arts Festival has been released. For the first time, the festival, which takes place in Indio, California, will be stretched out over two weekends; beginning April 15th-18th and finishing April 20-22nd. This is likely to accommodate for the large crowds (last year the the attendance record was estimated at about 100,000 people) that travel world-wide for the outdoor festival. Each weekend will have identical lineups, […]
The Popblerd Chart Report 1/6/12: Wrapping Up 2011 With A…Smile?
So, I’m sure you’ve all seen various news articles saying things about the state of the music industry in the previous year. Here are a few irrefutable facts as well as a listing of the top selling albums of the year. Music sales are up vs. the previous year for the first time in seven years. Despite a so-so fourth quarter, sales of prerecorded full-length albums were up 1% over 2010. Does this mean the CD is on the rebound? […]
The Popblerd Chart Report 12/30/11: Adele’s Biggest Week Ever
Well, folks: we’re about to wrap up the chart year. There’s only one week left, and industry watchers are on the edge of their collective seats, wondering if music sales will actually increase over the year before. As we headed into late fall, that looked like a sure thing, as sales of albums were trending at about 4% over 2010. However, a 4th quarter schedule devoid of blockbuster releases a la Taylor Swift and Kanye West last year has narrowed […]

If you haven’t seen the Popblerd Staff’s Best Of Music 2011 list, check it out . Big Money and I discussed this list in the year end edition of Blerd Radio. We go over the top 40 albums of the year and discuss our thoughts of where certain albums landed. Did Bon Iver deserve to be our top album of the year? What kind of songs will Adele write in five years? Do the Beastie Boys deserve to be so high on the […]
bLISTerd: The Popblerd Staff Presents The Best Music of 2011…And Some Playlists!!
We’ve spent much of the past week looking back at the year that was, with many of the writers on staff posting their lists of their 11 favorite albums of 2011. Everything from indie rock to hip-hop got mentioned, and every writer that contributed an individual list (and a couple that didn’t) ranked their albums. Those rankings were then compiled and the result…a quick and dirty list of the site’s 40 favorite albums of the year. Suck it, Billboard! 1) […]
bLISTerd Presents: Mike A’s Top 11 Albums of 2011
I think I listened to more new albums in 2011 than any other year of my life. Between searching for quality releases to review for my own blog and being asked to contribute to Popblerd!, my quest to find new music easily took me through a few hundred albums. Some I couldn’t make it past more than a couple songs before I knew it wasn’t for me. There were plenty of disappointments and yes, I’m looking at you Coldplay. Some […]
