The first impression I get of the first new Bob Mould material in almost three years is that the recent re-issue of the Sugar catalog (And subsequent Copper Blue-themed tour this fall) has put the short-lived power rock band back to the forefront of Mould’s consciousness. “The Descent” (Off of Silver Age, due September 4th on Merge Records) comes off loud and upbeat and is sure to be a live favorite but more importantly, could easily be the first single off a new Sugar album while not being a retread of old territory. If you were ever a fan of latter day Husker Du, Sugar, or the more plugged in Mould solo outings, then “The Descent” is going to make you very, very happy.

Silver Age is out September 4th through Merge Records. Pre-orders are up here.
