That “Kush” experiment didn’t work out the way we wanted it to, did it? Dr. Dre finally (officially) releases new music from the long-in-gestation Detox, and what happens? No one really gives a good God damn. “Kush” stalled somewhere in the middle of the charts. Not that it was a bad song per se, but it certainly wasn’t the certified dopeness Dre was capable of. It was also probably worth noting that both his co-stars, Snoop Dogg and Akon, have seen better days creatively.

So, we’re back for Round 2, and this time, Andre has decided to go with his surest bet of all, Slim Shady. “I Need a Doctor” features Eminem as well as female vocalist Skylar Grey, and it sounds to me like they were going for a little of that B.o.B. “Airplanes” flavor with this rock-influenced track. Give Dre props for backing away from G-funk, but I’m not sure that this song is gonna do the trick either. First off, this song is about 75% Eminem to about 25% Dre. Second off, Dre’s verse sucks. Third, as strong an emcee as Eminem is, his verses are a thematic recycle of 1999’s “What’s the Difference?”. Shit, what happens when you don’t have anything new to rhyme about anymore? Guess we just found out…
