I’d completely forgotten about Avril Lavigne until a month or so ago. Not that I was ever a big fan of hers or anything, but she was omnipresent for four or five years, and then she kinda just disappeared. Then I spotted her on the American Music Awards, followed by her appearance (via cleverly executed sample) on Rihanna’s latest album. It was so weird-like my brain had willed her out of existence. I didn’t even have any songs of hers on my iTunes library (a situation that my love for Rihanna’s album changed when I gave in and got “I’m With You”.
Well, she’s gone from a precocious teen to a divorcee in her mid-twenties, but she’s still got an attitude, as evidenced by her latest single “What the Hell”. Produced by Max Martin (who I believe also helmed her last major hit, “Girlfriend”), the song sounds like typical Avril. I’m glad no one decided to Gaga her out. It’s reasonably catchy, and will probably be a huge hit. I’m not impressed enough to say that I’ll go out and buy Avril’s album when it comes out, but I must say it’s nice to see a chick in pop music who can still rock out a little. And she’s kinda kute (word to Joe Jackson), so there’s that.
Check the song out for yourself here. Avril’s new album, Goodbye Lullaby, comes out March 8th.
