RIP Adam Yauch
Friday afternoon brought the terribly sad news that Adam Yauch (aka MCA, aka Nathaniel Hornblower) had passed following a three year bout with cancer. While a lot of media are rightly looking back on Yauch’s incredible career as a musician, rapper, artist, director, and activist, I’ll not spend too much time here rehashing his litany of accomplishments over the last 26 years. Instead, I thought I’d chime in with a little reflection on Yauch’s impact on your old pal Dr. […]

Everything from indie rock to hip-hop got mentioned, and every writer that contributed an individual list (and a couple that didn’t) ranked their albums. Those rankings were then compiled and the result…a quick and dirty list of the site’s 40 favorite albums of the year. Suck it, Billboard! 1) […]

There were a lot of terrific rock albums in 2011, but the one that stood out for me was Fucked Up’s David Comes to Life, and not just because I can’t say the band’s name in front of my mom. The Toronto hardcore act has been around for a decade or so, signed to Matador for the last three. David Comes to Life is a sprawling rock opera about a factory worker in 1970s-era England, but more importantly, it kicks […]

The Viewfinder: Beastie Boys “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win (feat. Santigold)”
If you didn’t know this already, the Beastie Boys are back in a big way in 2011. If the fantastic Hot Sauce Committee Part Two or the “Make Some Noise” short film didn’t convince you then their latest dub-tinged single featuring Santigold most surely will. Ok, not only is “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win” one of the best songs on the recently released Hot Sauce Committee Part Two but the Spike Jonze-directed short film megamix version that […]
