Spin Cycle: Of Monsters and Men's "My Head is an Animal"

Spin Cycle: Of Monsters and Men’s “My Head is an Animal”

As I hinted when reviewing Of Monsters and Men’s Into the Woods EP a couple of months ago, the pop and indie universes seem to be on a collision course. This isn’t an entirely new phenomenon – remember all of the hullabaloo surrounding Modest Mouse embracing Top 40 with “Float On” back in ’03? – but we’ve reached a point, culturally, where the dividing line is almost nonexistent. Arcade Fire and Bon Iver have Grammys now, and Gotye and Florence + The Machine are […]

bLISTerd: The 100 Best Albums Of The '00s (100-91)

bLISTerd: The 100 Best Albums Of The ’00s (100-91)

We’re in 2012. Is it too early for ‘00s nostalgia? Oh, the first decade of the new millennium. The decade we were introduced to the iPod, the smart phone, texting and all sorts of technological advances that have made us incredibly lazy beings. We decided to start voting for our pop stars on TV, Janet Jackson torpedoed her career by showing us a nipple, and Mariah Carey went crazy and then made a comeback (but she’s still crazy). Oh, and […]

The Viewfinder: “Dilly” by Band of Horses

One of my favorite musical discoveries of 2010? Band of Horses. No, they’re not a new band, but it wasn’t until I saw them perform acoustically earlier this year that I officially fell in love with them. Their latest album, “Infinite Arms”, is a definite contender for my year-end Top Ten. “Dilly” is one of the more upbeat songs on “Infinite Arms”, and probably the album’s most straightforward pop song. The harmonies-as always-are great, and the video adds a certain […]

Heading Down to “Georgia” with Band of Horses

Band of Horses just might be my favorite discovery of 2010. The Seattle band’s latest album, “Infinite Arms”, fuses Southern rock with sweeping orchestration and harmonies so tight they make the hair on my (not-exactly-infinite) arms stand up. I got the chance to catch them at an intimate record store performance two days before “Arms”, and I was blown away. BoH and Cee-Lo have been doing the Mutual Admiration Society thing for a couple of months now. The former Gnarls […]

Chart Stalker 5/27/10: Exile on My TV

The biggest news on this week’s album chart? A TV show. The second biggest news? A 40-year old album. First things first. “Glee: The Music: Showstoppers” bows atop the Billboard 200 this week, with 136,000 copies sold. It’s the second chart-topper to boast the “Glee” brand in the past 6 weeks. The hit FOX show is now a true phenomenon, with no end in sight. A distant second goes to the reissue of the Rolling Stones’ 39-year old classic “Exile […]

New Release Report 5/18/10: Feast or Famine

After a couple of weeks with barely anything to recommend, there’s a veritable cornucopia of quality new music in stores today. These releases cut across all genres, and as appreciative as I am to have good music, I’ve gotta ask: CAN Y’ALL SPREAD THIS SHIT OUT SO I DON’T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT DROPPING SIXTY BUCKS ON NEW MUSIC IN ONE DAY???? DAMN! Just saying… Anyway, these records come 100% Blerd Approved. If you don’t like ’em, maybe there’s something wrong […]
