Is musical talent hereditary? There can be cases made for and against that theory. One case study that might cause you to tick “yes” would be any discussion of the Finn family. We first met the quirky Kiwis back in the ’70s when Tim and Neil Finn were in Split Enz. Neil eventually split off and became the focal point of legendary pop/rock outfit Crowded House (in case I haven’t mentioned it before, “Don’t Dream It’s Over” is one of my favorite songs ever.) Neil and Tim have also recorded as a duo, The Finn Brothers.
Over the past seven years or so, I’ve also become acquainted with the music of Neil’s son, Liam Finn. His music is quirky yet tuneful and melodic. Nowhere near as accessible as his dad’s, but almost as hooky. Liam further impressed me when I saw him live 3 or 4 years ago, and this five-foot-zero beard with legs strode onto the stage and proceeded to play the shit out of ever single instrument.
Liam’s third album, The Nihilist, came out last summer, but is still spawning interesting visuals, including this one for the track “Wrestle With Dad”. The video features-you guessed it-Liam and Neil involved in a hilarious tussling match that involves cliff-throwing, near-drowning, and a couple of nut punches. Keep your eyes peeled for a hilarious ending, as well. Nice job, gentlemen! (and perfect for those that want to celebrate Father’s Day a little late).

That…was a strange video :p. You gotta love these two dorks.
I need to work on catching up on Liam Finn’s stuff. Next time I have the money on me, this album is going on my “to buy” list. I’m thrilled to see the family talent continues to run strong with the Finns-such a shame they don’t get more recognition here in the States.
Nice write-up :).

Thanks Angie! All of Liam’s albums are good, and I strongly suggest you see him live!
