It’s been eight years since a new Modest Mouse album graced store shelves. That’s not D’Angelo long, but it’s still more than a hot minute, especially for a band that presumably would’ve been looking to build on the success of their first #1 album. In the time since We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank hit stores, Isaac Brock and company have toured consistently and parted ways with legendary guitarist Johnny Marr after only one record. They were also rumored to be working with OutKast’s Big Boi, but it doesn’t look like that’s an ongoing concern anymore.
Strangers To Ourselves, the Washington-based band’s sixth full-length album of new material (amidst a sea of EPs, outtake sets and more) will arrive in March. It’s been preceded by “Lampshades On Fire,” a song that, if nothing else, proves that the band hasn’t undergone any serious sonic changes since their last record. Upon my first listen last week. I concluded that it pretty much sounds like you’d expect a Modest Mouse single to sound. That might turn some folks off, but I’m with it.
