The TVOne series UnSung is a must-watch for anyone who has even a passing interest in soul, funk or hip-hop music. The documentary series has spotlit artists that haven’t gotten their proper mainstream recognition over the past few years, with episodes paying tribute to Sylvester, Teena Marie, Eric B. & Rakim, Teddy Pendergrass, DeBarge and many more.

Most recently, TVOne has expanded the UnSung brand to focus on names from film and TV, including Pam Grier and the cast of What’s Happening?! But starting at the end of this month, they’re going back to their bread and butter with a 10-episode season featuring some of black music’s most intriguing personalities of yesteryear.

The first episode of the new season features R&B singer-turned-evangelist Montell Jordan (of “This Is How We Do It” fame,) and continues with episodes featuring star-crossed boy band Hi-Five, Cleveland rap legends Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Southern soul shouter Wilson Pickett and more. I’ll admit to being particularly interested in Martha Wash’s story, which airs on August 20th. Originally a member of Sylvester’s backup group, Two Tons o’Fun (later renamed The Weather Girls after scoring a hit with “It’s Raining Men,”) Wash gained the most notoriety after a slew of late ’80s dance hits by Seduction, Black Box & C&C Music Factory featured her voice but not her image, nor was she publicly credited for delivering the vocals for these songs. After successfully suing the producers of those songs, she entered a second successful phase of her solo career.

All of these episodes look to be fantastic. I am very much anticipating checking these out, and you should too. Which episode are you most excited to see?
