I begrudgingly came to appreciate Katy Perry following the irresistible 1-2 punch of “California Gurlz” and “Teenage Dream.” Pop music done perfectly, these songs were more than worthy of the acclaim they received. I wouldn’t call myself a fan nowadays, but if one of her songs comes on the radio, I don’t lunge to change the station like I did in the “I Kissed A Girl” days. Damn it, do I hate that song.
Anyway: after taking a short break, Katy’s back, minus one Russell Brand, plus one John Mayer, and with a brand new single called “Roar.” The anthemic new single doesn’t have the same charm that “Teenage Dream” or “Gurlz” possessed, but, all things considered, it’s a pretty decent pop song at first listen. It also sounds quite a bit like Maroon 5’s “One More Night,” right? Or am I hallucinating? I bet that wily Max Martin has something to do with this.
…and no thanks, Katy, for including the iPhone alarm tone at the beginning of this lyric video. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching into your pocket as soon as you hit “play.”
“Roar” is available now. Its parent album, Prism, will be available October 22nd. You’ll be hearing this one for the rest of the year.

I’m with you on the intolerability of “I Kissed a Girl” and then most of the singles after that being halfway appealing, but I can’t really agree on this new one. It just sounds like an incredibly generic pastiche of pop music clichés. I love a good pop song but this one just sounds like re-heated leftovers to me. Hopefully one or two of the next 10 singles off the album will hit closer to the target

Ha! Yeah–I liked it more with successive listens.
I just thought “I Kissed A Girl” was offensive.
