We’ve been waiting for a new John Legend album for a hot minute. Well, at least I’ve been waiting for a new John Legend album for a hot minute. That said, if Chrissy Teigen was my girlfriend, I’d be taking my sweet time when it comes to going back to the studio.

Legend’s last album was 2011’s Grammy-winning Wake Up! with The Roots. His last solo album was Evolver, which came out in 2008, an eternity ago. He teased us with the single “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” and has added his vocals to a variety of songs over the past few years, but “The Beginning” officially announces his fifth album Love in the Future, which will be out a little later this year.

It’s classic John Legend: a little bit of wink-wink nudge-nudge sexuality, some classy crooning, a little piano, with a slightly more modern production touch. Think Usher’s “Climax” or Ne-Yo’s “Lazy Love.” There’s the smallest bit of an indie rock influence to the production that I totally dig.

Thumbs up, Mr. Legend. Anxiously awaiting the new album.
