From “Jersey Boys” to “Movin’ Out” to “Mamma Mia,” pop music has provided fertile soil from which to make a Broadway hit. This success on the Great White Way has led to silver screen opportunities for some of these shows. “Mamma Mia,” of course, was a massive hit (with one of the most successful soundtracks of recent times,) and now the show “Rock of Ages” is being brought to life in cineplexes near you.
The love story features many of the biggest radio rock hits of the Eighties, and in the movie, those songs will be performed by a pretty interesting ensemble cast. Tom Cruise is in it (which alone pretty much guarantees that I won’t be watching) as are Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Alec Baldwin, and Mary J. Blige. Yes, THAT Mary J. Blige. Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta portray the leads.
This trailer for the movie, featuring MJB as a strip club opener belting Journey’s “Any Way You Want It,” is strangely difficult to pull your eyes away from. I’m feeling like this movie could be the perfect hot mess for late night viewings on cable or on-demand when you’re drunk, stoned and/or bored.
This is freaky, dude!!
“Rock of Ages” hits theaters on June 15th.

This looks like the artistic equivalent of watching your parents get riotously drunk at a karaoke bar, then following it up with an episode of Glee. Yeah, I think I’m gonna sit this one out.
