One DJ’s Opinion: 15 Horrifying Karaoke Songs

Dear readers, it’s time to come clean. Sure, by day I’m Drew, prolific album reviewer and Popblerd contributor; but at night, I put my DJ cap on, and provide karaoke to the masses with the same mixture of good-natured pomposity, mild music snobbery, and hit-or-miss humor that you see in these pages every day. I used to be a karaoke fiend, searching for the best seedy spots to score applause and compliments, but I’ve moved on to hosting; which, like […]

The Blerd & Gonzo Cover Convo: “Family Man”

Dr. Gonzo: BLERD, I’M A BUSY MAN Blerd: Ha! i didnt even see you there! My fault…i was deep into the book i was reading. So, I thought about five different songs we could use today…at least! Kept changing my mind. G: It’s good to have options. B: Oh man, you’d have had PLENTY of em. But in the end, I narrowed it down to one song. bLISTerd Extra: The Best Albums of 2011…So Far! (Rob’s Turn)

While of late I have been obsessed in equal parts with stoner rock and the first ten Chicago records (don’t ask), I’ve also been wired into some fine new sounds outside those two poles. It’ll all change by year end, but as of now, here be my faves: 1. Foo Fighters: Wasting Light. Their best record by such a wide margin, it’s almost like we’ve been listening to a different band for the last 15 years. 2. Peter Bradley Adams: […]

Chart Stalker 6/23/11: Bad Meets Evil and Tops the Charts

Eminem has returned to the top of the Billboard album charts, and he’s brought his homeboy Royce Da 5’9 along with him. Teaming up as Bad Meets Evil, the duo debuts at #1 with Hell: The Sequel. 171,000 people bought the album; not fantastic numbers for a title Eminem-affiliated, but this album comes without the pop cachet that his solo albums generally have. In other words, this is something for the hip-hop heads. So a chart-topping debut is still impressive. […]

Chart Stalker! 7/14/10: Hip-Hop Saves the Day

So much for saying that rap music is a dying commercial art form. If it wasn’t for hip-hop, this week’s #1 album would have only sold 45,000 units. Rappers manage to take the top three positions on this week’s Billboard album chart, led for a third consecutive week by Eminem. “Recovery” continues to defy expectations, experiencing only a 27% drop in it’s 3rd week and selling a still impressive 229,000 copies. The last album to sell more than 200,000 copies […]
