I’m not sure what I was expecting from a new Adam Lambert album. I thought he was interesting on “American Idol”-his nose for theatrics and his powerful voice separated him from the rest of the pack (and only good ol’ Middle American homophobia prevented him from winning the season.) His first post-“Idol” album, For Your Entertainment, was more entertaining than I expected. Adam’s voice proved to be pretty versatile, working it’s way through bombastic ballads, fluttery rockers, and straight ahead pop-rock. I wasn’t super-excited about a follow-up, but Adam’s rep ensured that I’d at least give it a listen, which is more than I can say for…well, just about anyone from the last four seasons of that dang-blasted show.
Well, here we are. After numerous delays, Lambert’s sophomore effort, Trespassing, is officially here. The voice is as full-bodied as it was before (man, how nice is it to hear someone who can sing without computer assistance?) but the music has changed a bit. Adam’s gone full-out dance-pop here, and it actually works to his advantage. It gives lip-service to current trends but the folks Lambert works with here (a motley crew of collaborators that runs the gamut from Bruno Mars to Pharrell Williams) haven’t forgotten the need for melody. All great dance music is able to be sung along with outside of the club, and the fact that the folks on Team Adam remembered that pushes Trespassing to the front of the line in terms of pop music circa 2012.
The first 2/3 of the album is a non-stop dance party. Skateboard P contributes two of his best compositions in years-the title track (which is a bit reminiscent of “Hollaback Girl” but, you know, good) and the heavily caffeinated “Kickin’ In.” Adam joins forces with Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers and Aussie soul singer Sam Sparro for the sassy “Shady” and then channels P!nk circa “Raise Your Glass” for the track “Naked Love.” All of the songs mentioned are melodically sound and masterfully sung. There aren’t too many singers out these days (particularly dude singers) with the lung power of Glambert.
The midtempo and ballad cuts that comprise the last third of the album aren’t bad, either. Adam wrings every ounce of drama out of the standout track “Underneath,” while “Chokehold” suggests Depeche Mode from the Violator-era as sung by a 21st century version of Freddie Mercury. At a compact 12 tracks (guess who finds it unnecessary to spring for deluxe versions?) Trespassing is satisfying and it doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.
The ratio of bad albums to good albums that have emerged from the “American Idol” camp in the last decade is something like 30: 1. Aside from Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia and possibly Elliott Yamin, I can’t think of a contestant from the TV show who has put out more than one album worth a damn (with all apologies to Carrie Underwood, I’m just not a fan.) Adam Lambert has succeeded in not only putting out two solid albums, but also makes me quite curious about what he might pull out of his glittery hat for album #3.
Grade: B+

Awesome review. I love the album. But I promise you that you’re missing out by not getting the Deluxe of this. Runnin’, Take Back, and Nirvana are stellar. They have a darker, slightly more rock-ish than pop-ish, sound and therefore don’t belong on the main album for sonic reasons, not because they’re not good enough to make the cut.

You say you don’t find it necessary to spring for the Deluxe Edition – but – did you perchance, hear the three additional tracks from it? Runnin, Take Back, and Nirvana? Many people are strongly attached to these as well – myself included. In my opinion, Runnin is brillant! Anyway – if you did listen to these three tracks, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on them. And, by the way, I found your review of the standard edition to be a healthy, fair one. 2 thumbs up!

It’s too bad you didn’t spring for the Deluxe, the bonus tracks are more than just bonus tracks. Runnin enyoyed a spot on itunes of being the most downloaded track off the CD for a while, it was even higher than the title track. Adam uses his lower register and uses to almost 3 octaves. You may want to give a listen at itunes 🙂 js
Great review though, thanks 🙂

The 3 songs on the deluxe version are well worth checking out, esp. “Runnin'”, which is actually charting as a single on iTunes right now, although not released as a single.

Totally agree with everything you said except for 1 thing…do yourself a favor and spring for the deluxe. The 3 additional tracks are heaven. “Runnin” showcases Lambert’s rarely heard lower register, which is lush and powerful…wow, that voice! There is not one throw-away track on this album, but my personal favs are Shady and Runnin. Very impressive pop album!

Love your review. How true that Adam can sing without autotune. He is fantastic for sure! ( I think your review reads more like an A to me,ha)

Love, Love, Love TRESPASSING. Your review was excellent, but being a school teacher, I think you should have passed out an A- instead of a B+, but that’s just me. Thanks for mentioning how talented Adam is.

Well Blerd….I enjoyed your review very much. But by now, as you can see….you missed out on 3 more decent tracks.Particularly “Runnin” in which Lambert displays an astonishingly lower register than we’ve heard from him yet, AND which contains about a 3 octave range, just within the one song.In fact, as of yesterday, that song was actually selling more singles on iTunes than any of the others. So I suggest you open that wallet and spring for the 3 bonus tracks or buy them as singles from iTunes. You’ll be glad you did. Thanks! ;D

“only good ol’ Middle American homophobia prevented him from winning the season.”
REALLY glad to see this mentioned. It’s nothing new, but I think it’s worth pointing out, for the record, how dynamic and exciting a contestant Lambert was for the fledgling “Idol”. There wasn’t one reason for him NOT to win other than the one you mentioned.

Not to shit on Kris Allen, but I’m pretty sure that the fact that LAmbert’s first album outsold Allen’s by about double speaks to how wrong “America” got that vote.

Glad to hear that Adam sounds good on the new release, although I have to admit that I was hoping that he’d go more the rock route. I’m not a dance/pop fan, so regardless of him sounding good, it probably won’t end up on my to-buy list.
I agree with you on the massive glut of crap that’s come from American Idol. It’s been mostly worthless outside of Adam, Kelly, and one other you forgot: Crystal Bowersox. I checked out her album, and it’s actually pretty good front-to-back. She wrote most everything on it, and it pays off because it feels honest and genuine.

Great review Big Money, but if I were you, I would’ve leaned for that A-. And really, you’re missing out on the deluxe version tracks.

Man, I know Crystal Bowersox’s name, but don’t think I’ve ever heard her sing.
It’s uber-dancey, so unless you dig that kinda stuff, it won’t register with you. But it is quite good.
