It’s been a hot minute since Nelly Furtado has put out an English-language album of original material. Can you believe it’s been almost six years since “Promiscuous” and “Say It Right” burned up dancefloors? Of course, she hasn’t been sitting on her ass since those singles (and the album that contained them, Loose) topped the charts. Nelly released a Spanish-language album and a greatest hits collection, and she’s collaborated with a plethora of artists, including K’Naan (their current collaboration “Is Anybody Out There?” is a Top 40 hit.)

Nelly’s new album, The Spirit Indestructible, is due at the end of June, and the first single is the uptempo “Big Hoops (Bigger The Better.)” It was produced by Rodney Jerkins, who has produced…well, just about everyone. It’s a fun track that references a lot of the early ’90s R&B that Nelly and I both grew up with. I’m not totally sold on the track yet (although the intentions are good) but still looking forward to hearing more from Nelly.
