This is to be expected, I suppose. Thanksgiving is less than a week away, which means any number of Christmas albums are hitting the market. The Biebs got a head start, but now here’s erstwhile Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland taking the holiday plunge with a new album of Christmas tunes, “Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

In the first video from the album, Weiland takes a stab at the old chestnut “Winter Wonderland,” trying to give off a Perry Como vibe with his karaoke crooning and Pete Campbell –esque (Mad Men, yo) slicked-back hair. Instead, he comes off like The Douche of Christmas Past. Accompanied by a clean-cut group of fellas and gals, Weiland looks like he walked into one of those retro Old Navy ads. Although he grimaces his way through the song, barely cracking a smile while surrounded by happy holiday celebrants.

As for the song itself, Weiland goes with a totally traditional sound, right down to the backing vocals. You could play it for your mom and she’d love it, so long as you don’t tell her it’s the guy who sang “Sex Type Thing.” Twisted Sister trod down this road a few years back, but at least they brought something interesting to the table by making songs like “Deck the Hall” sound like, well, Twisted Sister songs.

But Weiland wanted to go with a 1940s feel. The video’s so straight-laced, it makes you wonder if it’s all just a spoof. Whether the joke is on the viewer or Weiland himself is another question entirely.
