Chris Martin is the Rodney Dangerfield of contemporary rock music-the man gets no respect. Coldplay is arguably the biggest rock band in the world right now (certainly the biggest to emerge in the past decade), and the man still gets shit for everything from being somewhat obvious about his influences to his occasionally “wimpy” music to his kid’s name (although if Apple goes to public school, she needs a name change stat because the bullying will be MEGA.)

Personally? I like Chris. And Coldplay. I wasn’t totally feeling Viva La Vida-I don’t know that an arena-friendly sound always suits them, but it’s not like it was BAD. Just…disappointing. A little.

The band is getting ready to release new music this fall, and the first song to emerge from those sessions is called “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall”. Idiotic title aside, this isn’t a bad song. I hear everything on this track from bands that have influenced them (U2) to bands that they’ve influenced (tell me the ending of this track doesn’t sound like How to Save a Life” by The Fray.) It’s more of a grower than an immediate gimme, but all in all, I dig. What do YOU think?
