I’m not much of a theater-goer, but I feel as though I’m gonna have to make quite a bit of time this year to check out music documentaries. As I’ve mentioned several times (most recently last week), the Tribe Called Quest film, “Beats, Rhymes & Life”, is #1 on my must-watch list. However, another documentary that I recently got wind of is the Cameron Crowe-directed “PJ20”, the subject of which is one of my all-time favorite rock bands, Pearl Jam. A 30-second trailer for the film popped up online last week, and it doesn’t give us a whole lot (the band-in ridiculously hideous Nineties fashion) discusses changing their name from Mookie Blaylock (who was an active NBA player at the time and no doubt would have given his lawyers a buzz if he hadn’t already) to Pearl Jam. Given PJ’s two decades of success, I wonder if Mookie (who’s been all but forgotten at this point) feels like he should have let the band use his name. Ah, well. Missed opportunities.

There’s no release date for “PJ20” yet, but the band’s been pretty busy lately, what with the recent reissues of Vs. and Vitalogy and Eddie Vedder’s upcoming solo album. Hopefully the movie arrives soon. Until then…
