If you, like me, have been salivating for a viewing of the controversial Michael Rapaport-directed Tribe Called Quest documentary “Beats, Rhymes & Life”, then you’re in luck, as a national rollout was just announced. The film premiered at the Sundance festival earlier this year, screened at the Tribeca Film Festival in NYC last night, and officially premieres in New York and Los Angeles on the 8th of July. Over the following month or so, it will hit most major cities (including Boston, thank God).

The study of one of hip-hop’s greatest groups (maybe Top 5?) has hit a couple of bumps on the road to release, most notably in the form of gripes coming from Tribe leader/focal point Q-Tip. The preview I saw a couple of months ago promises a drama-filled documentary, for sure. Noted hip-hop head Rapaport screened the movie at Sundance with a very emotional Phife Dawg, and let’s face it-if an artist sees a movie about themselves and doesn’t have any problems with it, it’s probably a whitewash of some sort. Needless to say, I’m looking very much forward to this.
