Coming on the heels of my look at Neneh Cherry’s much underrated Homebrew album is the announcement that the songstress has a new album headed for the release schedule. She, her husband Cameron McVey, their daughter Lolita Moon and DJ Matt Karmil formed the group cirKus a few years back. They released Laylow in 2006, followed by a remix album a year later. The outfit’s sophomore effort, Medicine, was released in 2009 overseas, but is finally about to see release on American shores. Normally, I regard press releases as hyperbole, but the names that are checked to compare to the cirKus project sound pretty logical when you look at them against Neneh’s three solo albums as well as the fact that both she and Cameron have worked with several of these artists in the past-Tricky, MF Doom, Martina Topley-Bird, Gang of Four, Gorillaz, Four Tet, The Specials and early PiL. Punk-funk indeed!
The first single from Medicine is entitled “Drug of Choice”. I’m already feeling this one, and I’m sure you will too! (wow, that kinda sounded like Don Cornelius).
