I believe this is the first Award Show Sunday that predates my birth. As I’ve been on a Carpenters kick lately, I figured posting one of their several Grammy wins would be appropriate. What a category to win in, too? For Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus in 1971, they were pitted against four legendary groups-The Jackson 5, Chicago, Simon & Garfunkel, and The Beatles. Granted, their win sort of underscores Grammy’s historical bent towards the middle of the road, but can anyone really argue with the win?
A few things make me kind of smile when I watch this clip. One is the incredibly bad joke David Cassidy makes while presenting. Talk about a bomb-I hope the writers were fired after that one. There’s also the Robert Parish screwface on Karen Carpenter’s grill when The Carpenters’ nomination is announced. Maybe Richard farted or something when the nominations were being announced. Ah well, at least she recovered the smile in time for the acceptance speech.

Nice post, Mike. I love The Carpenters, but Richard is one of the most uptight musicians ever! Ah well… there is no denying their talent, is there?

Ha. Well, I don’t know much about Richard Carpenter personality-wise. Why do you say he’s uptight? Wasn’t the guy zoned out on Quaaludes for years?
