I’d written Coldplay off after Mylo Xyloto. Chris Martin and co. seemed a bit bored or stuck in a rut. Last year’s Ghost Stories was a nice little bounce back, though. A shinier dance/pop-influenced sound seemed to reinvigorate the band a little bit, although I couldn’t help but feel a little “hey, is this Chris Martin doing a Maroon 5 and wanting a solo career without wanting to disband the group so he retained name recognition?”
Barely a year later, Coldplay is back with “Adventure Of A Lifetime”, which goes for a more organic but still danceable sound. I definitely feel a little Bernard Edwards in the elastic bassline, and the Middle Eastern motif that runs throughout the song is a nice touch as well. “Adventures”‘ parent album, A Head Full Of Dreams, is out 12/4 and is rumored to be the band’s swan song. If that rumor holds true, at least it seems as though Coldplay will be going out on a high note.
