De La Soul has been one of the groups at the heart of hip-hop for a quarter century. This past year has been something of a victory lap for Pos, Dave and Mase. They embarked on a well-received tour, released their catalog for free (briefly) and have dropped a handful of tunes over the course of the year. There’s still no official release date for their long-gestating album, You’re Welcome, but while you’re waiting, please feast your ears on “The People.”
In light of current events, “The People” is especially hard-hitting. To amplify the message, De La has recruited the legendary Rhyme Animal Chuck D to contribute a verse.
