Record Store Day 2013 was not a memorable one for me. The list of releases was mediocre, and as it turns out, the day before Record Store Day was the day that Massachusetts police caught Dzhokhar Tsarnaev about 3/4 of a mile from my house.
However, over the past couple of years, Record Store Day has released a solid amount of exclusive titles on Black Friday. Generally known as the biggest shopping day of the year, it’s the day everyone shakes off their “itis” from Thanksgiving dinner the night before and heads to Target at 4 AM for $100 laptops.
This year’s Black Friday titles are fairly interesting. So who knows? I might venture out and try to get my hands on some of these. The full list is below, but here are five highlights.
Dawes Stripped Down At Grimey’s: The California quartet known as Dawes have become favorites of the folk-rock set, touring with Dylan and performing with Robbie Robertson. Taylor, Griffin, Wylie and Tay are excellent live performers-trust me, I’ve seen them north of ten times. In lieu of a proper live album (which I’m sure will happen at some point,) the fellas are issuing this nugget from a performance at Nashville’s best indie record store, Grimey’s. Elvis Costello & The Roots Wise Up: Thought Remixes & Reworks: The Roots? Perfection. Elvis Costello? More perfect than not perfect. Although I have yet to give Wise Up Ghost repeated, involved listens, I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve heard. Might remixes courtesy of Black Thought give me more incentive to listen? Possibly. Nasty Nas Halftime: “Halftime”‘s already on Illmatic, so this would be a pretty unnecessary purchase for me, but…I wonder if there’ll be anything cool on the B-Side…
Nirvana In Utero (2013 mix): Those of us who have any of the In Utero 20th anniversary reissues already know, at least in part, what the “2013 mixes” of “All Apologies,” “Rape Me,” etc., sound like. If you don’t, and you like to spin the vinyl, then this is perfect for you. (available as a vinyl album)
Vince Guaraldi Trio Linus And Lucy: Because if you don’t have anything from A Charlie Brown Christmas in your music collection, you are a Communist. (available on 7″ vinyl)
