For the past few weeks, I’ve been organizing my music collection by genre, and one of the hardest questions to answer is “where the hell do I put RJD2?” Is he hip-hop? Is he pop? Is he rock? Is he dance music? Really, though, RJ’s music contains elements of just about every musical category in existence, evidence of the man’s skill. Turntablist, producer, singer, songwriter and musician-dude is the whole package.
RJ’s new joint, “Her Majesty’s Socialist Request,” doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel (at least not to those familiar with his work,) but it still knocks hard. Far from a song you passively bob your head to, “Request” has a bunch of “blink and you’ll miss ‘em” musical interludes, all held together by a rock-solid rhythm.
RJD2’s new album (which I’m super excited about) is called More Is Than Isn’t, and arrives on October 8th.
