Remember SWV? The New York-based female trio burst onto the scene in 1992 and quickly scored hit after hit with jams like “I’m So Into You”, “Right Here/Human Nature” and the ballad “Weak.” All three songs, from their debut album, It’s About Time, found themselves in the top 10 of Billboard’s pop chart and contributed to Lelee, Coko and Taj’s Best New Artist Grammy nomination and multi-platinum sales. They were sort of the bridge between En Vogue and Destiny’s Child, only with an authentic hip-hop appeal-almost as though Mary J. Blige split into triplicate.
The threesome recorded two more albums before splitting towards the end of the decade. Primary vocalist Coko (she of the Dragon Lady fingernails) scored moderate success, first in a similar R&B vein, then as a gospel vocalist. The trio reunited on several occasions (and disbanded again on several occasions,) mainly due to Coko’s reluctance to pursue a secular career path. They were most recently spotted on the BET Awards a couple of years ago with Alicia Keys.
Well, looks like Sisters With Voices have made their return, with a new song called “Co-Sign” and an album scheduled for later this year. For their first new material in over a decade, “Co-Sign” is a bit underwhelming. The production sounds a little dated (and not in that cool throwback way) and also, the track sounds kinda cluttered. The ladies still sound good-especially Coko, who can belt. I’ll reserve complete judgment for now, but here’s hoping that the magic returns on future singles.

This sort of fits in right where they left, which isn’t to me, necessarily good, but I did get a early 90s vibe when hearing it. Hopefully they can do something together. I always liked them, more so in singles, than full albums, but they were still pretty fun to listen to.

It sounds really ’90s for sure, just updated with contemporary slang. Always more of a fan of their midtempos and ballads, anyway.
