Not that I’ve ever been the world’s biggest M.I.A. fan, but her best songs have kind of a kooky, fun vibe to them. I should probably admit that the recent furor surrounding the “Born Free” video (and the stupid New York Times interview brouhaha) have left me wondering if M.I.A. is all manufactured controversy and no substance, or if she somehow thinks she’s more important than she is (she definitely takes herself more seriously than she should). With that said, even if the way she handles herself kinda bugs me, the fact of the matter is that it would make no difference if I liked the music. And in the case of “Maya”, I don’t particularly like the music.
You can read my full review of the album (as well as tons of other cool reviews) on Eat Sleep Drink Music.

I haven’t heard the album, but that song/performance is fucking dreadful. It’s just noise. And not brilliantly-constructed, artistically-satiating noise like Skinny Puppy or Sonic Youth either. It’s literally just some douchebag mashing on a keyboard. It’s like that Kat DeLuna trainwreck with indie self-righteousness.
