There’s always been a place in the pop music world for the dancing, singing diva. Madonna set the template. Janet Jackson and Jody Watley were next up to bat, and were followed by a long list that stretches from Pebbles and Karyn White through Britney and Christina all the way to today’s favorites like GaGa and (sigh) Ke$ha.
The latest up to bat just might be Long Beach, California’s Tyla Redd. Blessed with a versatile voice and drop-dead gorgeous looks, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t be able to compete with any of today’s pop/soul divas. As evidenced by the track “Barbie”, she can even get her pop/rock on when she wants to. With pop divas like Rihanna attempting to blur the lines between rock and R&B, that’s not a bad thing to be able to do. Then again, she does list The Cranberries as one of her influences. So long as she doesn’t start yodeling like Dolores O’Riordan, we’re OK. I still have nightmares about “Zombie”.
Proving that she already has a leg up in a world full of multi-hyphenates, Tyla is also a fashion designer.
