Welcome to the year I became a full-fledged adult.
We Saw It!: The Foo Fighters In Newark, NJ: 11/14/11
When is the last time you’ve seen a veteran band successfully drive a concert with their new album? Enter Foo Fighters. The band — and specifically Dave Grohl — find themselves in an impressive place. They are both commercially viable and and a finely tuned machine. Some bands try to mix the new stuff in, leading to buzz kill bathroom breaks. Others will announce they opening with some new stuff, basically to get it over with. The Foos ripped through […]
Blerd Briefs: Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson & The Black Keys
When Amy Winehouse passed away last summer, there was a bit of a question as to whether there was enough material left behind to create a posthumous album. Well, you’ve now got your answer. Lioness: Hidden Treasures will be released on December 5th, and will contain 12 tracks of unreleased material in the form of “new” original songs, demos and alternate versions of previously unreleased songs. According to Universal, Amy’s label, the album is “a collection of songs that were […]
Spin Cycle: Puddle of Mudd’s “Re:(disc)overed” // Powerman 5000’s “Copies, Clones & Replicants”
Almost universally maligned as a once-relevant band’s career-twilight last-ditch stab at relevancy, the all-covers album more often than not allows a bereft-of-inspiration artist to court a last gasp of sweet, sweet mainstream success by promising songs the listener already knows and loves, and not those pesky tepid originals that said artist has been peddling for the past twenty years or so to increasingly-diminishing returns. And all under the guise of “paying tribute to our idols, man”. Seems like, to court […]
Chart Stalker! 8/4/10: Shock! Horror! Eminem is Unseated!
Guess what, folks? For the first time in a month and a half, someone named Eminem does NOT have the week’s #1 album. Hard rock favorites Avenged Sevenfold nab the top spot on the Billboard charts with their new album “Nightmare”. 163,000 folks headed to record stores or their favorite online music outlet to purchase the band’s latest effort, putting them about 3,500 copies ahead of Eminem. “Recovery” holds strong at #2 with 157,000 copies sold. With the premiere of […]
New Release Report 6/15/10: Let’s Get Drizzy
For the five of you who (like me) haven’t illegally downloaded it off of the internet, Drake’s debut album, “Thank Me Later” is finally released after a year of pre-release buzz. I’ve gotta say, the fact that “Thank” is on the lips of hip-hop fans everywhere is a testament to the marketing team behind Drake, who’ve apparently gotten hip-hop fans everywhere to drink the Kool-Aid and put their marbles behind a a personality-deficient Canadian former child actor with caterpillar eyebrows. […]
