It’s embarrassing how much fun the debut from David Draiman’s Device is at times. I’m a casual Disturbed fan, owning the first three records at least, but you mention industrial metal to me and cite early Nine Inch Nails (Going so far as to cover “Wish” on the Deluxe Edition) and Ministry as influences on your latest project and consider my interest piqued. That said, Device is a solid debut that doesn’t stray too much from the Disturbed mold yet […]
Spin Cycle: Serj Tankian, Harakiri
Outside of Zach De La Rocha, I don’t think there exists a more passionately political figure in music than Serj Tankian, front man of the long dormant System of a Down (how dormant? Serj is now two solo albums away from matching the band’s entire catalogue). He’s founded an activist group with former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and never misses a moment, be it at concerts or on the Internet, to share his views on global events, […]

The Viewfinder: Serj Tankian’s “Figure It Out”
Earlier this month we clued you in about Serj Tankian’s new single “Figure It Out” , from his upcoming album Harakiri. I described the track as a crunchy, manic political rocker with a rather blunt lyrical style (at least with the chorus “CEOs are the disease”). Yesterday, Serj released the official accompanying video for the track which is, unsurprisingly, also manic and rather direct. Playing off the Occupy Wall Street zeitgeist of the time, Tankian intersperses video of every day protesters with shots of fat […]
New Release Report 9/21/10: Wanna Get Your Hands All Over Maroon 5?
I’m scared of the new Maroon 5 album, “Hands All Over” ( purchase on Amazon mp3 ). The first single, “Misery”, seemed like the height of laziness to me. If you stuck “This Love” and “Makes Me Wonder” in a blender, the result would be “Misery”, and despite the critical arrows that seem to get slung Adam Levine and co.’s way, they’re definitely better than that. However, no less an authority on music than Popdose’s Grand Poobah Jeff Giles Y’all has deemed M5’s third studio effort, “Hands All Over”, […]
