How about this one, folks? A Maroon 5 and Lady Antebellum collaboration that features not one member of either group in the video? Ladies and gentlemen, I present you “Out of Goodbyes”. I may have been remiss in calling Maroon 5’s Hands All Over a flop. It’s been certified Gold, and Adam Levine’s hosting gig on “The Voice” has re-energized the album, as it’s crept back into the Billboard Top 200 with a vengeance. This song, one of the better […]
C’mon Son!: Five “Get it Together” Hopes for 2011
I realize that I spent most of the past seven days talking about how great music was in 2010, and like I’ve said before, last year was one of the best years for music (no matter the genre) in quite some time. That said, there were a number of musicians who disappointed me last year-either by making substandard records or by being complete asses publicly. Here are five artists who either need to right the ship from a musical standpoint, […]
Chart Stalker! 12/30/10: The Home Stretch!
Taylor Swift hangs on to the top spot for yet another week on the latest Billboard chart. She’s gonna come within a hair of scoring 2010’s top-selling album, but Lady Antebellum and Eminem are standing in her way.
Another Billboard Nail-Biter: Chart Stalker! 9/30/10
In the red corner, an upstart country band who won the 2009 Grammy for Best New Artist. Representing for the peeps who like a little bit of Jack Johnson with their Kenny Chesney, we have…the Zac Brown Band! In the blue corner, a group of funk/rock pros whose lead singer has finely chiseled cheekbones and unbelievably sculpted hair! The Grammy winner for Best New Artist of 2004…Maroon 5!! It was a close race for the top of the Billboard charts […]
Maroon 5’s New Record Could Benefit From Some Dirtier “Hands”
For all the critical slings and arrows that get tossed their way, I’ve always thought Maroon 5 were pretty darn OK. Not the world’s best band (their Best New Artist Grammy win over Kanye still leaves me scratching my head), but consistently enjoyable if mainstream pop/rock was your thing. Their songs hit the sweet spot between funk and rock, making them sort of the 21st version of Hall & Oates…or Chromeo without the irony, if that’s more your bag. While […]
Chart Chat 9/23/10: Linkin Park and Trey Songz In A Photo Finish!
1,005 units separate this week’s #1 and #2 albums in one of the closest races for the top spot in history. The eventual victor? Rock giants Linkin Park score the top spot with 241,000 units sold of their fourth studio album, “A Thousand Suns”. While that sum is healthy, it is cause for alarm considering that LP’s last album, “Minutes to Midnight”, debuted with triple that sum just three short years ago. Linkin Park’s sound has gradually evolved over the […]
New Release Report 9/21/10: Wanna Get Your Hands All Over Maroon 5?
I’m scared of the new Maroon 5 album, “Hands All Over” ( purchase on Amazon mp3 ). The first single, “Misery”, seemed like the height of laziness to me. If you stuck “This Love” and “Makes Me Wonder” in a blender, the result would be “Misery”, and despite the critical arrows that seem to get slung Adam Levine and co.’s way, they’re definitely better than that. However, no less an authority on music than Popdose’s Grand Poobah Jeff Giles Y’all has deemed M5’s third studio effort, “Hands All Over”, […]
Chart Stalker 7/21/10: The Singles Bar
There’s not a heck of a lot to report on the album chart this week-we are officially in the summer doldrums, although the first serious challenger to Eminem’s four weeks and counting run at the top of the chart arrived in the form of Rick Ross. If his “Teflon Don” can squeeze out 130,000 or so copies (not a stretch considering the rapper is inexplicably popular), he has a chance of sliding Slim Shady out of the perch he’s inhabited […]
Will Maroon 5’s New Song Add to or Take Away From Your “Misery”?
Going from a Phil Collins post to a Maroon 5 post in a 24 hour span might turn off anyone reading this site who isn’t pop friendly, at which point I should probably ask: if you’re not pop friendly, then why the hell are you reading this site? At any rate, there are lots of reasons to hate Maroon 5: their lead singer, Adam Levine, has impossible cheekbones and has carved several celebrity notches into his bedpost, they’ve got a […]
Smoothed Out Sundays: "Sunday Morning"
Hi, my name is Captain Obvious. The concept of Smoothed Out Sundays makes so much sense to me because, well, Sunday’s always been that kind of day for me. When I was a kid, nothing in my house got started on Sunday before noon. Even after noon, the family was moving at a very leisurely pace-when I was younger, it was catching a noon service at church, then either heading to the park to watch the softball team my grandfather […]
