Fact #1: I’m not crazy enough about modern-day “SNL” to watch it every week. Whether I tune in or not depends on a) whether I’m even home to watch it (I don’t have DVR) and/or b) who the guest host is? Jason Segel? Totally tuned in. The lady from “Mike & Molly”? Happened to get home in time to catch the last half or so (and she was pretty funny, too.) Katy Perry? Not a chance in hell. Despite the […]

Chart Stalker 9/15/11: Strait to…#3?
A country superstar he may be, but the legendary George Strait couldn’t topple Lil Wayne or Adele from their perches at the top of the Billboard album charts this week. His Here For A Good Time makes a pretty respectable debut with 91,000 units sold, but lands at #3 on the list, behind Weezy’s 219,000 (a pretty steep dropoff in The Carter IV‘s second week…blame it on bad word of mouth) and Adele’s 121,000. Adele’s numbers continue to be mind-blowing. […]
2011 MTV Video Music Awards Live Blog
It’s the 2011 version of the VMAs and really, other than who has a hot single, what’s the real difference from year to year? You take a bunch of famous pop stars, give them tons of alcohol, and just let them act the fool on live TV. I think the real question should be: Who is going to do something that makes the Twitter go crazy? Kanye, Lady Gaga, or how about Kanye? My money’s on Kanye. I have my […]
Chart Stalker 8/19/11: Are We Already Out of Throne Jokes?
Surprising no one, Jay-Z and Kanye West debut at the top of Billboard’s album charts this week with Watch The Throne. The highly anticipated wap cowabbowation (sorry, that was my RZA voice) scores 2011’s second-biggest first week, after Lady GaGa’s Born This Way (which is still holding on at #18). Unlike GaGa, Jay and ‘Ye didn’t benefit from special pricing at a digital account. Actually, it could be argued that Throne was a limited release. It was available for half […]
Katy Perry (and the Usual Suspects) Lead MTV VMA Noms
I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn’t too early for VMA Nominations to be announced. Lo and behold, we’re almost done with July, and now is the usual time that the nominees for the show-an MTV institution since 1984-to be announced. To (what should be) no one’s surprise, the leading nominees are Katy Perry, Adele and Kanye West. Whatever you think of the music made by any of these artists, you have to admit that Perry […]
Chart Stalker 6/23/11: Bad Meets Evil and Tops the Charts
Eminem has returned to the top of the Billboard album charts, and he’s brought his homeboy Royce Da 5’9 along with him. Teaming up as Bad Meets Evil, the duo debuts at #1 with Hell: The Sequel. 171,000 people bought the album; not fantastic numbers for a title Eminem-affiliated, but this album comes without the pop cachet that his solo albums generally have. In other words, this is something for the hip-hop heads. So a chart-topping debut is still impressive. […]
Popblerd!’s 2011 Grammy Preview: General Field
And now, here are the big’uns. The Grammy Awards are tonight, and so far, we’ve looked at picks for rap, country, R&B, pop, dance and rock. All that’s left (besides polka, classical and a bunch of other categories I know absolutely nothing about) are the major, prestige categories. So, without further ado, let’s see who’s up for the serious hardware on “music’s biggest night”, and don’t forget that I will be live-blogging the show tonight, with updates on the site […]
Popblerd!’s 2011 Grammy Preview: Pop & Dance
Pop is such a random catch-all term that it’s hard to figure out how the people that nominate artists for the Grammys figure out what constitutes “pop”. Of course, if you’re in the know, you just know that the labels that nominate their artists designate what categories certain songs go into, so…yeah, it’s totally random. This year’s nominees are the typical mixed bag of pop, a term that can navigate vast waters and describe everything from Michael Buble to Lady […]
