The Singles Bar: Jack White's "Love Interruption"

The Singles Bar: Jack White’s “Love Interruption”

If you and I have had any discussion about the music of the previous decade, I’ve probably made it painfully aware that I’m a huge fan of Jack White. From The White Stripes to The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, his production work with Loretta Lynn and Wanda Jackson, the innovative things that he’s doing with Third Man Records , and hell, even off the wall TV appearances like this recent episode of American Pickers – I’m consistently impressed with White’s output (let’s just slide that collaboration with the Insane Clown Posse under the rug, shall we?). The only thing more impressive […]

New Release Report 1/31/12: Lana Del Tuesday

New Release Report 1/31/12: Lana Del Tuesday

Hard to believe we’re already wrapping up the first month of 2012. As we’re all paying our rent checks and upping our monthly bus and train passes, there are a few noteworthy releases that you might want to check out during your travels. Who’s Lana Del Rey? I’m still trying to figure that out myself. Whether she’s a well-connected fraud, a junior GaGa or just a random chick trying to get famous (or all three) there’s no doubt that the […]

The Singles Bar: John Legend's "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)" featuring Ludacris

The Singles Bar: John Legend’s “Tonight (Best You Ever Had)” featuring Ludacris

Missed John Legend? Well, he’s back, and he’s brought Ludacris on board for his brand new single.

The Singles Bar: Nixon Nyce's "Pat City"

The Singles Bar: Nixon Nyce’s “Pat City”

Here’s the dilemma. Not only is Nixon Nyce a valued member of the Popblerd! staff, but he’s one of the leading lights in Boston’s hip-hop scene. Thing is, his new song, a remix of Tyga’s “Rack City” called “Pat City” is about…the New England Patriots. Even if I wasn’t a diehard New York Giants fan, the fact of the matter is that I hate the Patriots. Actually, I don’t hate the Patriots. I […]

Blerd Radio Is Back: Season 2, Episode 1

It’s been a long time, we shouldn’t have left you…yeah, we’ve been there before, haven’t we? Well, we were gone for two whole months-encompassing most of the holiday season. But we’re back and we don’t intend on leaving you again anytime soon. In this episode, Mike and Jesse atone for their absence (again) but hit the ground running. There’s some Super Bowl news, some Oscar nominations news. We defend Nickelback (sort of), anticipate the new Van Halen album, watch Elton […]

The Singles Bar: Trampled By Turtles’ “Alone”

If you were wowed by the likes of Mumford & Sons last year, I urge you to check out Duluth, MN’s Trampled By Turtles. Drawing from the same well of Americana and folk influences (and with cooler beards,) this band has built a groundswell of support up over the past couple of years. I’ve seen them live twice in Boston-first at the Middle East Upstairs and most recently at the Paradise, where they rocked a sold-out crowd about as hard […]

Bruce Springsteen announces 2012 E Street Band tour, dates

We here at Popblerd are pretty keen on the sexiest senior citizen in rock n’ roll, Bruce Springsteen. Granted, some of us more than others – I hear that man-crush Drew has on The Boss is undying and a little bit creepy. Fortunately for Boss fans, Bruce has announced another round of touring dates for 2012, in anticipation of forthcoming album Wrecking Ball. You can catch the sweat-soaked, three-hour-plus shows at any of the venues below, and in the meantime, […]

The Viewfinder: Santigold’s “Big Mouth”

I know that I’m not alone among the Popblerd staff in my love of Santi/Santogold’s debut album from 2008.  It was a tight and consistent disc, pulling influences from new wave, rock, dancehall and electro.  I was so enamored with it, in fact, that I named it my pick for album of the year in 2008. So it is with great excitement that after four years, we’re  getting new music from Santigold.  Sure, she’s spent a lot of time in […]

The Singles Bar: De La Soul's Plug 1 and Plug 2 Present First Serve's "Pushin' Aside, Pushin' Along"

The Singles Bar: De La Soul’s Plug 1 and Plug 2 Present First Serve’s “Pushin’ Aside, Pushin’ Along”

De La is back!! Sort of… It’s been a long, LONG, LONG time since the greatest rap group of all time (in my humble opinion) dropped The Grind Date. In the meantime, the plugs have been touring the country and overseas, they’ve released a couple of mixtapes, and won a long-deserved Grammy for their work on Gorillaz’ “Feel Good Inc.” They have finally decided to make their return-with a project under a pseudonym that’s got a wacky-ass premise. Just like […]

The Singles Bar: Bruce Springsteen’s “We Take Care Of Our Own”

Generally speaking, a new Springsteen album is always cause for excitement, especially in this writer’s tiny New Jersey household where The Boss has achieved demigod status along with Stephen Colbert and Batman. Bruce, after enduring the loss of fellow E Street Band members Danny Federici and Clarence Clemons – the men behind, respectively, the keys and the saxophone, arguably two of the most crucial components of the warm, vibrant E Street sound – has valiantly chosen to soldier on […]

Political Excursus: SOPA, PIPA and the Future of the Internet

Political Excursus: SOPA, PIPA and the Future of the Internet

As you perused the web yesterday, you no doubt noticed that a number of sites – Reddit, Wikipedia, WordPress, the Cheezburger Network (of I Can Haz Cheezburger and FailBlog fame) among them, went dark. As you no doubt discovered this was in a collective move to protest something called SOPA/PIPA. Popblerd decided not to go dark for the day. However, we do feel that this is an important issue that has received little media attention until the blackouts. We thus […]

This Year’s Coachella Lineup Is Hipster Heaven!

After several false-alarms and Photoshopped posters, the official lineup for the 2012 Coachella Music and Arts Festival has been released. For the first time, the festival, which takes place in Indio, California, will be stretched out over two weekends; beginning April 15th-18th and finishing April 20-22nd. This is likely to accommodate for the large crowds (last year the the attendance record was estimated at about 100,000 people) that travel world-wide for the outdoor festival. Each weekend will have identical lineups, […]
