Spin Cycle: Tenacious D’s Rize of the Fenix

Jack Black and Kyle Gass are back with another collection of songs; on “Rize of the Fenix”, Tenacious D subvert their jokey expectations by delivering a pretty rockin’ record.

The Jukebox From Hell 11: "Rockstar"

The Jukebox From Hell 11: “Rockstar”

Yeah, it’s easy to hate on Nickelback. But you’ve never read an ass-whipping as eloquent as the one Drew gives the Canuck schmucks’ “Rockstar.”

The Idiot Box: 18 First-Timers Who Should Totally Host “SNL”

With the recent announcement that Eli Manning has been tapped to host weekly live comedy show “Saturday Night Live” on May 5th, coupled with the knowledge that Justin Bieber is confirmed to host before the current season’s over, NBC appears to have dropped the ball in the tail end of a season that has boasted some reasonably strong hosts. Episodes from Jason Segel, Charlie Day, and returning host Jonah Hill were uniformly strong, offsetting questionable outings from guest hosts Anna […]

The Idiot Box: SNL Parodies Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know”

Have you figured out yet how madly in love I am with Gotye’s “Someone That I Used To Know”? I missed this weekend’s episode of “Saturday Night Live” (Josh Brolin…meh…) but this skit containing Taran Killam (SNL’s MVP this season,) the always dependable Andy Samberg and Gotye himself is pretty damn hilarious. At least the guy’s a good sport, right?

Funny Or Die Presents: CCOKC (Child Celebrities Opposing Kirk Cameron)

It’s really sad to see what Kirk Cameron has become, if only because “Growing Pains” was one of my favorite sitcoms as a kid. His extremist Christian views have rubbed many the wrong way, and the folks at Funny or Die have joined forces with a bunch of his former child star brethren to respond to Kirk’s hurtful comments about gay people in the best way possible-with humor. Child Celebrities Opposed to Kirk Cameron (AKA CCOKC…pronounced “cock”) is a hilarious […]

The Viewfinder: Bon Joviver’s “You Give Love A Bad Name”

Here at Popblerd, we enjoy using our Viewfinder and Singles Bar columns to highlight new and exciting tracks for your listening pleasure. We also like drawing attention to videos that make music nerds giggle. Bon Joviver falls into the latter category. As it turns out, Bon Joviver is exactly what it sounds like: an uncannily accurate facsimile of the bearded folkie who made Popblerd’s Top Album of 2011, singing the irrepressible New Jersey rocker’s mega-hit “You Give Love A Bad […]

The Jukebox From Hell 10: “Yahhh!”

Imagine, if you will, the fictionalized account of struggling Atlanta stage actor DeAndre Way: raised in the ATL, this product of urban ennui always longed to escape his existence by treading the boards. Blessed with a sonorous baritone, piercing, unblinking eyes, and a Shakespearean sense of dramatic heft that could bring to life even the dense, entendre-laden work of the Bard’s finest prose, DeAndre knew that he was born for the stage. Surely, even as all of his friends and […]

One DJ’s Opinion: 15 Horrifying Karaoke Songs

Dear readers, it’s time to come clean. Sure, by day I’m Drew, prolific album reviewer and Popblerd contributor; but at night, I put my DJ cap on, and provide karaoke to the masses with the same mixture of good-natured pomposity, mild music snobbery, and hit-or-miss humor that you see in these pages every day. I used to be a karaoke fiend, searching for the best seedy spots to score applause and compliments, but I’ve moved on to hosting; which, like […]

The Viewfinder: “When The Night Falls” by Chromeo

If you haven’t picked up Chromeo’s Business Casual album yet, you are missing out on some serious dance-pop goodness. These two Canucks make music that takes listeners back to the glory days of post-disco dance pop. It’s got a 1983 flavor, with a little bit of 2011 irreverence thrown in. The year-old project has gotten a new life, including the announcement of a tour with them and kindred spirit Mayer Hawthorne, and a video for the single “When The Night […]

bLISTerd: Top 10 “Chappelle’s Show” Skits

Practically from the second “Chappelle’s Show” debuted on Comedy Central in 2003, it was a classic. Take one comedian who clearly didn’t give a fuck, fantastic writing from the likes of Neal Brennan, and a team of players that included Donell Rawlings, Charlie Murphy, Rashida Jones, Billy Burr, Mos Def and many others. Add in musical performances from the best of hip-hop and R&B, and “Chappelle’s Show” became must-see TV for lots of people, with each season becoming more anticipated […]

Aging Hip Replacement Part 1: Dave’s Rambling Internal Monologue

It’s hard for me to see myself as others now see me.  I’m almost 40, bald (although I shave my head thank you very much!),  I wear a suit to work, own a house, drive a sedan, have a son…for all intents and purposes I’m a white, middle class dad whose nearing middle age.  I’m closer to the demographic of Men of a Certain Age than I am Friends.  And yet I don’t feel like it. In so many ways […]
