Not only am I a fan of Julian Velard’s music, but I’m a fan of him as a person.
The Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter was brought to my attention a few years back by Popdose major domo Jeff Giles. Julian’s a little bit Billy Joel, a little bit of an edgier Ben Folds, and (if we’re gonna be topical) maybe a little bit Joan Rivers…
…as evidenced by his stage presentation. I was fortunate enough to catch him last night at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA, and he put on a fantastic show that included plenty of snarkily funny commentary, covers of Toto’s “Africa” (with Ari Hest and opener Chrissy Poland in tow) and Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel,” and plenty of great originals…
…including “No One’s Getting Married Tonight,” a song that can be found on Julian’s latest album If You Don’t Like It, You Can Leave. The video, which you’ll find below, was shot several weeks ago at Julian’s actual wedding (mazel tov, Julian.) Talk about multi-tasking. It’s festive without being showoffy, heartwarming without being corny, and a lot of fun to watch.
Look for cameos from fellow singer/songwriters Alex Dezen (of the Damnwells,) Ryan Montbleau, and others.
