A year or so ago, the 2Pac hologram appeared at Coachella. It was a pretty cool novelty, the audience was surprised, and we all sat and wondered who the next artist to get the hologram treatment would be. Once it happened a first time, a second time was inevitable.
After a couple of close calls (Freddie Mercury? Michael Jackson? Left Eye?), we finally have an answer-two answers, in fact. Coming from slightly outside left field, the touring hip-hop festival Rock the Bells has announced its 10th anniversary lineup. The lineup includes Bone Thugs’ n Harmony and Wu-Tang Clan…and hologram images of Eazy-E and Ol’ Dirty Bastard will appear onstage with each of those artists, respectively.
I’m not sure how I feel about this. I’ve never been a big Bone or Eazy fan, and while a hologram ODB amuses me (and even intrigues me a little bit,) I find it kind of creepy.
That said, the 2013 Rock the Bells lineup is pretty mediocre. It’s a little too new artist-heavy for my tastes, plus it has Tyler the Creator (who I find reprehensible) on it. Ah, well. Not like it’s coming to my neck of the woods anyway. The full lineup is below.
Tickets for three of the four show dates go on sale Saturday 5/18. The Washington DC date goes on sale a week later.
Dates are:
9/7, 9/8-San Manuel Ampitheater (San Bernadino, CA)
9/14, 9/15-Shoreline Ampitheater (Mountain View, CA)
9/28, 9/29-Festival Grounds @ RFK (Washington, DC)
10/4, 10/5-Meadowlands Racetrack (East Rutherford, NJ)

I wonder what the cost differential is between just signing another living act and producing the holograms.

Huh. That’s a really good question. That said, these holograms are supplemental as opposed to being a main act. Which is good, I guess.
