Ezra Koenig Gets a Little Weird on Major Lazer’s “Jessica”
by MJ on Mar 12, 2013 • 12:00 pm No CommentsI’m pretty fond of a lot of the productions that Major Lazer have (has?) done over the past few years. Usher’s Diplo-produced “Climax” was one of my favorite songs of last year. So I was pretty stoked to see them do their thing live. What did I get? Well, let’s just say I won’t be going to a Major Lazer show again if I can help it.
I guess I can say the same for Vampire Weekend. Although I’m head-over-heels in love with their two albums, the live experience was a bit lacking. It actually wasn’t much different than sitting at home listening to the record. So, while I’m super excited for their new album coming out in May, I don’t know if I’d shell out dough to see them perform live again.
So…Major Lazer recruits Vampire Weekend lead singer Ezra Koenig for the new jam “Jessica.” Koenig, singing in falsetto and blurred out by the deliberately muddy production, is damn near unrecognizable. But I still kinda like the song. Maybe it’s my soft spot for reggae. Maybe it’s the fact that I damn near get a contact listening to this song. It’s kinda dope, in a super offbeat, weird kind of way.
Major Lazer’s Free the Universe is out April 15th. Vampire Weekend’s new album comes out May 9th.
