It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from the matchbox twenty guys. Their last studio album release was a decade ago. Since then, they’ve put out a hits compilation with a hearty helping of new songs, and lead singer Rob Thomas has released two solo albums.
Before we go any further, I’m more than happy to let it be known that I’m not a matchbox twenty/Rob Thomas hater. While their catalog is uneven, Thomas is a damn good songwriter when he wants to be. I’d say “If You’re Gone”, “Bent”, and “Unwell” are good enough to cancel out songs like “Real World”, “Push”, and most of the new songs on that hits compilation.
So, the guys released their new single “She’s So Mean” yesterday, and…holy crap. It’s pretty damn good. It’s hooky as all hell, definitely a fun summer tune. Although lyrically, it reminds me uncomfortably of Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” I’ll still give it high marks for now. Just straight-up, well-written Top 40 pop/rock. They should have no problem cruising up the charts with this one.
matchbox twenty’s fifth album, North, will be released this September.

I agree – a well-written summer song. Not too deep, not too serious, just right for bopping around the pool with a beer in your hand. And a little kinky if you listen closely!
