The announcement of a new Pelican EP is always a good sign because it means a full-length is usually not too far behind. It’s been 3 years since Pelican unleashed the mighty What We All Come To Need and I, for one, have been dying to hear new music.

“Lathe Biosas” is the first taste of Ataraxia/Taraxis due on April 10th through Southern Lord and it’s a smoldering pile of monster riffs that does not disappoint. Every Pelican song is a journey and “Lathe Biosas” is no different. It lumbers along with gigantic guitar sounds coming from the dynamic duo of Trevor de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec (The tones coming out around three minute and fifty seconds are the kind of things that made me fall in love with this band when Australasia came out) coupled with an unmistakable drum pounding from Larry Herweg (Or as my wife likes to describe it: “Too cymbal-y”) especially around the minute forty second mark. Let’s not forget Bryan Herweg either who delivers one of the most melodic bits during the breakdown in the middle.

AND it’s under 30 minutes! How can you beat that in a new Pelican song? You can’t. Which means you have no reason not to listen to it below and then go here to download it for free.

Ataraxia/Taraxis is released on April 10th. Let’s hope album number five makes it in the year 2012 as well.
