The Singles Bar (Sort Of): The Darcys Cover Steely Dan’s “Josie”
by MJ on Jan 13, 2012 • 9:30 am No CommentsIf you’re gonna remake a song, you might as well make it enough of a departure from the original song that people find it interesting, right?
Canadian band The Darcys didn’t have a problem making their cover of Steely Dan’s “Josie” interesting, that’s for sure. Their version, which is available for free download on their website right now, darkens the Dan’s original quite a bit. Of course, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker always had a sinister element to their songs, but the slowed down, mysterious rendition that The Darcys play brings that element to the forefront, and, damn it, it works!
The Darcys are actually covering Steely Dan’s Aja (one of my all-time favorites) in it’s entirety! The album will be available (again, for free) on January 24th via digital download. You’ll also be able to buy it on vinyl. I’ll be checking this one out, for sure.
Meanwhile, check out the classic original version of “Josie.”
