For my money, Meshell Ndegeocello is (in Kanye West voice) THE MOST SLEPT-ON ARTIST OF ALL TIME!!
Seriously, I’ve been a huge fan since reading an article about her in “Black Beat” magazine (remember that?) and seeing her video for “Dred Loc” on Video Music Box (shit, remember that?) I have a special place in my heart for her 1993 debut, Plantation Lullabies. However, all of her albums since have been at least very good, and Bitter and Cookie: The Anthropological Mixtape are absolute masterpieces on par with Lullabies.
On November 8th, Meshell will release her ninth (!) album entitled Weather. The set was produced by the equally eclectic (and pretty awesome in his own right) singer/songwriter Joe Henry. The two have collaborated before, most notably on Bitter’s phenomenally haunting closing track, “Wasting Time”. So, yeah, this is pretty much a musical orgasm for me.
Meshell’s only got a handful of dates lined up so far, and I’m hoping she expands her tour. I’ve seen her three times over the years, and each show was unforgettable. She played Boston on the tour for her last record, Devil’s Halo, but for some stupid reason I missed the show. Anyway, check out the dates below and also check out the atmospheric first single from Weather, entitled “Dirty World”.
Meshell Ndegeocello tour dates:
11/14: Philadelphia, PA @ World Café Live
11/15: Alexandria, VA @ Birchmere
11/16: New York, NY @ Hiro Ballroom

Sigh. I love her.
And I like this, a lot. I’ll eagerly await her album – just like I’ve eagerly awaited every other one. Excitement!
