Spin Cycle: Kelly Rowland’s “Here I Am”

I root for Kelly Rowland hard. She’s gorgeous as I don’t know what, blessed with a fantastic singing voice, and has an affable girl-next-door quality that’s somewhat reminiscent of Janet Jackson in her late teens and early twenties. Unfortunately, Kelly has had to play second fiddle to you-know-who for her entire career (hint: she’s married to Jay-Z and her name rhymes with “Fiance”). It’s one of those “lucky-but-unlucky” scenarios that tends to occur with refugees from singing groups/bands that have […]

New Release Report 8/2/11: Fountains of Wayne Return and More!

One thing the sky is definitely not full of this week is CD releases. The past couple of weeks have been pretty quiet. Last week’s release schedule got a little smaller thanks to the mysterious disappearance of Odd Future member Frank Ocean’s album, and this week is another fairly blah affair. Thank goodness there’s Fountains of Wayne to give us a musical glass of water in this desert of a release schedule (strained metaphors anyone?) Sky Full of Holes is […]

Blerd Briefs: New Albums from Feist & The Roots! (Not Together…)

Within the past month, I’d inquired as to the whereabouts of Canadian chanteuse Feist. Last we’d heard from the singer/songwriter, her breakthrough album, The Reminder, was all the rage with the Triple-A set, and it’s signature song “1,2,3,4” was appearing in some commercial or other every seven minutes. Well, after taking a couple years off to chill, Feist is back. Her third studio album, Metals, is set for an October 4th release. The singer has also announced a tour that […]

The Singles Bar: Drake – Headlines

After keeping the world fed with ‘Marvin’s Room’ & ‘Trust Issues’, Drake is back to rapping (kinda, sorta). He released his highly anticipated Boi-1da produced single ‘Headlines’ via his blog OVO on the 31st of July. The song is catchy as hell and the wordplay is what Drizzy fans across the country can expect from the emcee! ‘Soap opera rappers, all these niggas sound like “All My Children” Enjoy the single. Take Care Oct. 24th http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYGKb6HOqk0

The Singles Bar: “Everybody” by Miguel Migs feat. Evelyn “Champagne” King

I’ll admit to not paying too much attention to the modern dance music scene, but there’s still a handful of names I recognize. One of them is Miguel Migs. The San Francisco native has remixed records for just about everyone. Running the gamut from Britney Spears to Lionel Richie, Migs is a giant in his genre. For his upcoming album, Migs has recruited an eclectic group of artists ranging from reggae legends Half Pint & Capleton to neo-soul pioneer Meshell […]

Metal Monday Volume 29 (8.1.11)

If I could sum up Dir En Grey’s latest album, Dum Spiro Spero, with one word it would have to be this one: Evil. Dum Spiro Spero is definitely one evil sounding motherfucker of an album. If you’re unfamiliar with the musical stylings of Japan’s pre-eminent metallers, then DSS is the perfect introduction to their unique blend of metal, prog, and pop. It’s this kind of mixture of styles that has worked so well for Dir En Grey over the […]
