Man, there was a point in time when dance music sucked. I’m talking about the late Nineties, when everything was techno bump-bump-bump. During my limited clubgoing experience, I found myself quickly discouraged, not only because the people that frequented those places weren’t exactly the types I wanted to hang out with, but also because the music generally sucked.

Thanks to groups like Daft Punk, dance music has taken a turn for the better over the past decade. I hate to say it, but that’s mainly because these groups all sound like they studied tons of disco records from the late Seventies and early Eighties. I mean, if you take the sound of New York City dance music from the early Eighties, sprinkle in a little bit of melodic intelligence in the ABBA mold, you’ve got the majority of good dance music these days.

All that to say, French dance duo Justice is back. “D.A.N.C.E.” was the slice of irresistible goodness you may remember them for. Their new single, “Civilization”, is a tad slower but is still a pretty solid jam that, even if it doesn’t have you all-out chair dancing, you’ll at least be doing a little wiggle in your seat (or like me, doing the chair-robot. It’s pretty awesome.)

No release date for Justice’s sophomore album yet, but I’d imagine it’ll be out in time for the summer. “Civilization” is one of those songs that sounds perfect blasting out of a radio on a warm spring day.
