If you’re a true music lover, you’re probably well aware that Terence Trent D’Arby didn’t stop making good music after his Grammy-winning debut, “Introducing the Hardline According To…”. Actually, Terence used his success to further his artistic vision, going on to make an additional four albums that fused rock and soul better than just about anyone not named Prince Rogers Nelson.
“TTD’s Wildcard!” was released in 2003, after Terence underwent a Prince-like name change of sorts, preferring to be known as Sananda Maitreya. The first single released from the project was the rock-etched groover “Designated Fool”. Featuring a tasty guitar groove, a stuttering bassline, and Terence/Sananda’s sensual growl (as well as his poetic lyrics), it was unfortunately the result of not only minimal promotion (I can’t even remember how I found out “Wildcard” had been released. I think I just accidentally noticed it in a record store), but also American audience’s disappointing but not surprising apathy towards TTD.
Terence/Sananda has not released an album on American shores since, which is a damn shame, because music sure could use him right now. Check out this performance of “Designated Fool” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno”, then go on Amazon or wherever and pick up a copy of “Wildcard!”. You won’t regret it.

Wow – awesome find!
As I recall, Wildcard was a free download on his website, then eventually got the cd release (the Wildcard edition). There are some real jams on that one – I’d say a return to form following Vibrator.
I had tickets to see him on this tour. Alas, he canceled day of. Was really psyched for it too.

You didn’t like “Vibrator”? I thought that was a really solid album.
