I am a child of the Eighties, and as such, I have a soft spot for Phil Collins.
I won’t go so far as to say he’s a guilty pleasure, simply because I feel no guilt about my love for the man. He’s a powerhouse drummer, a soulful singer, and he can write a hell of a hook. He’s also one of the more self-aware and funny rock stars of the era. Watch the videos for “Don’t Lose My Number” or “I Can’t Dance” for proof. That fact alone gives him major cool points in my book.
It’s been quite some time since Phil released new music-the past few years of his career have been spent playing a farewell solo tour, reuniting with Genesis for another tour, and various other issues including divorce and injury. However, the diminutive Brit is returning this September with “Going Back”, a tribute to the Motown music that he enjoyed in his youth. Remember, his first big solo hit was a remake of The Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love”.
The first single and title track is pleasant enough. It settles into a nice faux-Motown groove that might be just a little too laid back. But it’s a big improvement over the watery keyboards that open the song. For a second, I thought he was still stuck in cheesy “Another Day in Paradise”-mode. Anyhow, check the song out for yourself and let us know what you think!

Phil’s ‘Going Back’ album sounds like a neat idea…
In the actual song ‘Going Back’, i love that Phil Collins
sound. Back up vocals and musicians sound great to.
