bLISTerd: The Top 100 Albums of the ’90s (90-81)

Check out the first 10 titles on the list here   I could write a preface to this and each installment in this series, but seriously (to quote the title of one of 1990’s biggest albums), what can I say about the Nineties that a VH-1 soundbite hasn’t already said? Good God, what does that say about my ability to come up with a good soundbite? I’m going back to bed now. Here’s #90-#81. Venture a guess as to what #1 is yet? Spin Cycle: Wilco’s “The Whole Love”

It’s interesting, really, that Wilco’s latest album begins with the dissonant, twitchy, seven-and-a-half minute “The Art of Almost”. Not that it’s weird for Wilco to record long, strange songs that culminate in discordant, cacophonous jam sessions – “‘Spiders (Kidsmoke)’!,” everyone who’s ever heard the alt-country pioneers’ A Ghost Is Born record just yelped in unison – but because, once you get past the opening track’s mind-melting uniqueness, The Whole Love is really quite accessible. New Release Report 9/27/11: Oh Well, Whatever. Nevermind (Again)

Twenty years ago this week, a trio of wildly influential albums came out. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik gave that L.A.-based band their biggest success, turned rock/rap into an official “thing” and gave Rick Rubin producer cred after a couple of years in the wilderness. A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory turned that group from De La Soul Jr. into one of hip-hop’s most original and inventive acts. Meanwhile, Nirvana’s Nevermind helped bring alternative rock […]

More Festival News!: New Orleans Jazzfest Lineup Announced

One of my biggest regrets to date is that I have not yet been able to make it down to New Orleans. Several of my good friends have either gone to school in the area or have visited at least once. Between the craziness that is Mardi Gras and the amazing lineups that pop up for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival every year, I feel as though I’m missing out on what would be a really special experience. […]
